Three Great Montréal Farmers' Markets,
The Old City and the Port of Old Montréal

THIS 2008 BUS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED

You Deserved to be Pampered for a Day!

Without the hassle of driving and finding a place to park

In 2008 we are going to visit three of Montréal's Best Farmers' Markets and enjoyed their unique ambiances. They shopped for cheeses, bake goods, fruit, fresh vegetables, flowers, sausages, meats, wine, crafts, fish.... and brought insulated chests to put your perishables which were stored in the bus storage area.

We will spend spent 3 - 4 hours exploring
Le Marché  de l' Ouest, Jean Talon Marche and the Atwater Market and 3 + hours in Old Montréal exploring and shopping at the boutiques, partaking of the many outdoor cafes, visiting historic sites, crafts shops, and watching buskers and artists at Jacque Cartier Square.

Le Marché  de l' Ouest is located in the west end of Montréal island. The market attracts an abundance of shoppers who come to this local market to buy baked goods, fresh seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, a whole host of local and foreign cheeses, sausages of a number of varieties, cheeses, meats, wines of Québec  and France, freshly baked Montreal style bagels and produce grown in Québec and elsewhere.

Mums at Le Marché de l' Ouest

This market has recently been upgraded with an expenditure of 12 million dollars.  The aisles are wide and when the bus comes to this market there will be baskets of tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries,  and
long woven strings of home grown garlic.

Tomatoes for Sale at a market stand at Marché Jean-Talon

Marché Jean-Talon in Montreal's Little Italy, attracted a never-ending crowd of shoppers who come in droves for the abundance and freshness of its fruits and vegetables and for the many ethnically diverse neighbourhood merchants who contribute to its eclectic products and ambiance.

Our eyes wander through a kaleidoscope of colours while our nose and hands were off in search of fabulous aromas and inviting textures. In fact, all of our senses will be awakened in this euphoric environment.

Sooner than later, we succumbed to Premiere Moisson's breads, Chez Hamel's cheeses, and any of the judiciously displayed fresh meats and fish. Everything looked delectable, so we were not be surprised if we linger longer than expected for sheer pleasure to absorb the atmosphere of the market.

The market offers other surprises: charming Italian restaurants, a health-food shop, a musical instrument store, and depending on the season and holiday, entertainment.

A Produce Stand at the Atwater Marché

The Atwater Marché market is hard to miss. Its famous brick tower has loomed above Montreal's Saint-Henri district since 1931. The place offers something for every taste: delicious breads, pastries, pates and quiches from the Premiere Moisson bakery, assorted cheeses from cheese shops, succulent sausages and deli meats from William J. Walter, fresh seafood and meats, not to mention the countless fruit and vegetable stands.

To find spices or condiments to enhance your meal, you can visit the gourmet food shop, and for a good bottle of wine or Port, stop by the Quebec Societe des Alcools branch.

Marché Bonsecours - Old City Montreal Street in Old Montréal

As you stroll along the serpentine cobbles you can, stop at City Hall to admire its Second-Empire architecture, visit the archeological crypt under Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal's Museum of Archaeology and History, shop in the many boutiques for gifts for others and yourself, dance, sing, and watch the street performers on Place Jacques Cartier, have your caricature drawn by a street artist and visit the Marché Bonsecours, for its magnificent tin-plated dome, and for its world class designer boutiques. You can also find a great place to have some liquid refreshment and a meal for supper on one of many outdoor restaurants that overlook Place Jacques Cartier.

From Old Montréal, all roads south lead to the Old Port and an up-close-and-spectacular view of the St. Lawrence River.

As you stand on the shores of this mighty waterway, you'll see why the fur trading post established here by a group of French settlers in 1611 grew to become North America's largest commercial hub.

Today, impressive harbour-front facilities include a 2.5-kilometre-long recreational park along the river with promenades for  just strolling about, a state-of-the-art Science Centre, with interactive exhibits, a group movie game and an IMAX® theatre, river cruises for romantic dinners, bouquinistes, vendors of rare books, and warm, friendly bars where you can relax over a drink of wine or a latté with a clear view of the action. If you are lucky you will be part of the voyagers who are in the harbour with a cruise ship who are exploring the Old Port and Old City just like you.
